Healthy Snacking
A pregnant woman who is a normal weight before pregnancy needs, on average, about 300 extra calories a day — the amount that’s in a glass of skim milk and half a sandwich. Snacking is a good way to get the extra calories you need during pregnancy, as long as you choose healthy snacks that are low in fat and good for you. These include:
- Whole-grain crackers, pretzels and crispbreads
- Fruits and vegetables
- Nuts and seeds
- Low-fat cheese and yogurt
- Fruit shakes (for example, blend together frozen yogurt, a banana, a splash of fruit juice and a handful of berries)
