Dark Under-Eye Circles

Dark under-eye circles can be caused by age, allergies, heredity, broken blood vessels and fatigue. They can cause you to look tired and run down. Several treatments are available to give you a more refreshed look, but no treatment completely removes them.

Treatment Options

Staying hydrated: The area under the eye is extremely susceptible to dehydration. Drinking adequate amounts of water and refraining from caffeine and alcohol can do wonders for under-eye skin.

Concealer: Makeup is the most common treatment for dark circles under the eyes. Use a good hydrating eye cream prior to applying your concealer or makeup.

Topical treatments: Dark pigment under the eye is often inherited. If you have this condition, you may see it in other members of your family. Topical bleaching creams can lighten the under-eye skin.

Dermal fillers: If you’re seeing dark circles under the eyes from volume loss, then a dermal filler may be the best treatment. Fillers lift the skin and prevent light from accumulating in the hollows. Filler treatment can cause bruising, so give yourself two weeks to recover before any big event.

Lasers: Laser resurfacing can improve the skin tone around the eyes. These procedures have significant downtime and involve keeping the skin covered with ointment until it heals.

Surgery: Lower eyelid surgery or a lower blepharoplasty may be needed if you have excess skin or fat deposits under the eye. Your complimentary consultation will determine if you’re a good surgical candidate. If so, we will refer you to a facial plastic surgeon.
