Botox for Wrinkles
Botox Cosmetic was introduced in 2002 as the first botulinum toxin approved by the FDA for treatment of frown lines between the brows. Botox works by relaxing the muscles that are involved in frowning or creating wrinkles.
Botox can be used to treat:
- forehead lines
- frown lines
- droopy brows
- crow’s feet
- wide cheeks
- lip lines
- downturned mouth corners
- chin dimples
- neck bands
The treatment typically takes 15 minutes, starts working in 5 to 7 days, and can last for 3 to 4 months. The main risks are redness, swelling and soreness at the injection site. Any time an injection is given, there is a slight risk of bruising. There is a 1 to 2 percent risk of developing ptosis (heaviness) of the upper eyelid with the treatment of frown lines. This is temporary and can last for several weeks. If this occurs, please let your provider know because prescription eye drops can improve the condition while it lasts.
