Eating Well on a Budget
Planning your meals ahead of time and choosing healthy foods will help improve your diet and can save you money. Here are some tips for eating well on a budget:
- Make a list before you go food shopping.
- Buy only what you can use or store.
- Try store brands rather than name brands, and look for items that are on sale.
- Buy foods that are rich in nutrients. Fresh produce, low-fat milk, eggs, dried beans, enriched pasta, oatmeal, whole-grain foods, lean meats and fish are good choices.
- Select prepared foods, such as sandwich meat and frozen dinners, with care. Watch for salt content and added sugar.
- Contact your local senior center or meal program if you need help with meals.
- Try restaurants that offer senior discounts. Going out for lunch or to the “early bird special” often costs less than eating out at dinner time.
- Save half of your meal to take home. Many restaurants serve very large portions. Taking food home helps avoid overeating and saves money.
